I always thought that Invisible Man was science fiction.

On internships; I was fortunate in graduate school. I didn’t apply for an internship. Instead, I contacted an organization and asked them to create an internship for me + pay me. They said yes. That was in SF. A couple of years later, I used a similar strategy to conduct research at a Children’s Hospital. They paid for my daily lunch, that was all. But, the experience was great. But, then I hit a dry spell career-wise before landing a cool job. One never knows.

The part about Invisible Man reminded me of a non-fiction example of white leftists patronizing and utilizing a black man because of his race. From The Vital Center, by Arthur Schlesinger, 1949:

"Angelo Hernon, a Georgia Negro, was sentenced to twenty years in prison for passing out Communist literature on a street corner in Georgia. When he was finally freed, after nation-wide agitation, he was rushed to New York. A group of Communist big shots met Herndon, an intelligent, light-skinned Negro, at Penn Station. In the cab on the way to Harlem, Herndon heard Anna Damon of the International Labor Defense, a top Communist leader, remark that it was a pity he was not blacker."

My favorite story about the Oscars was about Flow winning— the main animator came really far out of the studio system, and worked on a laptop to help create this film that won best animation, the first Indie animation movie to ever win the Oscar for best animated feature. There was something very inspirational about his story and it’s also the first nomination and Oscar ever from Latvia, which just warms my heart.
