God, thank you for discussion Manne's book. As a post-grad in philosophy it is so dispiriting to see academics like Manne achieve great success on the back of such nakedly poor scholarship. We teach and mark undergraduates based on their ability to apply principles of sound argumentation, but then reward professional philosophers whose work rarely rises above the level of thinly-disguised assertion. There is no lack of philosophers who show an admirable degree of seriousness and intellectual honesty in their work. But Manne is one of an increasing number of theorists who have been handsomely rewarded for shallow argumentation and rhetorical evasion, just so long as it is in service of a particular (and arguably incoherent) moral and political outlook.
Okay, it's bizarre to write a book about your personal experience of fat discrimination (and how it is, ever so conveniently, a systemic/white supremacist/etc issue) when you are clearly about a size 10. I'm kind of shocked. Has nobody pointed this out to her? Did her publisher not say "look honey I appreciate your effort to be in the swim, and maybe you've had your struggles with an eating disorder or something, but this is not in fact an 'own voices' book"?
Keanu's partner is attractive, but doesn't look Botoxed to me. I'm 50 and I think her lack of wrinkles looks about average for women my age who didn't smoke or spend all their time tanning. I remember the Pierce Brosnan/wife kerfuffle; it was the first time I saw the phrase "men age like wine, women age like milk" -- words guaranteed to send me into a disgusted rage, which is probably the goal. I still don't understand the reasoning behind the particular usage, since the guy was saying that women are supposed spend their years having children, and that's exactly what Mrs. Brosnan did, so....what? Anyway next time I see that phrase I think I'll reply with a photo of Harvey Weinstein. Ugh.
I think if Kat goes through with the abuse of the AI image algorithm that she talks about here there is at least a 90% chance this is what triggers the Superintelligence to pull the trigger on the human race and we will honestly deserve it
"If I can't be beautiful, no one else can be, either" does seem to be the logical endpoint of Manne's uniquely neurotic and self-absorbed analytical approach. So she's got the courage of her convictions, I guess?
Here's something I didn't think I'd ever say, but I agree with Dogmatic Fetus. I was really interested in learning about Kate Manne at one point because I thought she'd have some more insight into her ideology and approach it from a philosophical angle, but she's never really offered that, she's a culture warrior through and through and sounds like everyone else writing hot takes online.
I tried to find the perfect beard dye that would make my grey beard look a natural black. But, such a product doesn’t exist because of a systemic problem. If only society valued male beard dye needs, then we men would not be oppressed. And the problem is intersectional because the Walgreens at the intersection of Sutter/Powell closes early.
Regarding fat people and airplanes; I am short, thin and still can barely fit into a middle seat on a plane. Larger and taller people need better accommodation while flying. Perhaps a modular seat installation design could remedy this unmet need.
[Time 22:00] Keanu Reeves is 2 years older than me. For some reason, men’s beards turn grey before head-hair turns grey. Men’s hair/beard dye technology has not yet mastered the challenge of “natural black”. Tom Cruise in “Collateral” had a whitish or light grey hair color that looked great

Could that be 40 Wall Street? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/40_Wall_Street
It is, owned by none other than the leading candidate for the GOP presidential nomination

This was a fun episode. But now I have to google Kate Manne’s photos and who knows what that will do to my algorithm.
