The episode was a useful reminder that we don't all live in the same universes, culturally speaking. For me, Studio Ghibli is one of the most recognizable brands in all media, and hearing the name mispronounced repeatedly was almost unbearable.
(To be fair, if you use English phonics, a hard "g" makes sense!)
I was sure they were going to say that the most recognizable Ghibli film was Spirited Away. I think My Neighbor Totoro is a little more likely to be a given American's *favorite* Ghibli film.
I also would have wanted to point out that Studio Ghibli is most known, at least to Americans, for the works of its most famous writer / animator / director, Hayao Miyazaki.
Anyway, I was able to relax and remember that everyone once in a while, people are going to bump up against something that's REALLY an intense personal interest of mine and they inevitably don't know everything about it, and that's okay.
I will sign off with my personal top Miyazaki (and therefore Studio Ghibli) films:
It’s funny because most bisexuals I know end up with men and they have other options. So why aren’t they being scrutinized in the same way as straight women? Like I know one argument here is everyone is just a puppet of societal conditioning but I don’t believe that. (I’m the rare bisexual who ended up with a woman but I think that’s just circumstantial.)
Regarding the influence of the unelected Musk: Kat and Phoebe are a bit too young to have appreciated the massive controversy generated by Hillary Clinton in the early 1990s. Going well beyond the usual First Lady do-gooderism, Clinton oversaw healthcare finance reform. The right-wing bleating was quite fierce because like Musk, no one had voted for here.
It didnt help matters that Bill joked about voters getting a two-for-one package deal.
Presidents having non-elected, unofficial advisors is not new. The wise men, which was the name of a book, comes to mind. Lincoln had a lot of advisers not in the administration.
The worst/most extreme case of non-elected people making decisions was Edith Wilson, who hid from the cabinet and vice president that her husband, the actual president, was barely able to function after a stroke. While I would like to hear more about the goings on in the Biden administration, the people who were doing a lot of heavy lifting in the Oval Office and campaign, it’s probably going to come out in drips and drabs. There would be a lot of mutual assured destruction among Democratic Party figures.
The number of executive orders is less an indicator. Most executive orders deal with the organization of the executive branch or presidential priorities. As the head of the executive, the president has a lot of power to prioritize what his administration focuses on. After 9/11, the Bush administration moved resources to terrorism. Obama moved DOJ resources to focus more on white collar crime. Trump I - DOJ focused more on violent crime and immigration.
I would date the current era of attempting to legislate by executive order to the Obama Administration. After years of saying he had no power to change immigration law, getting nowhere with Congress, said he “had a pen and a phone” and established programs like DACA and DAPA.
Yall, the lady in the meme is a fentanyl dealer. Sure, she looks like a lunch lady but she’s a fentanyl dealer. You can say you don’t like that they memed it but honestly, considering what she’s been doing, I’m not crying over this deportation. I’d much prefer the memeing than the Biden White House tweeting “if you’re unvaccinated you’re looking forward to a winter of sickness and death”. As if they didn’t know that was totally unnecessary fear mongering.
If you are in favor of the deportation (a reasonable position) then Kat’s point which I agree with is that the cruelty-is-the-point tone ultimately dooms this effort to failure
If I thought that anyone really thought the cruelty was the point then I would agree.
I think the entire argument of “the cruelty is the point” is an exercise in bad faith. It’s as simplistic and wrong as thinking pro lifers just want to control women. Or thinking liberals just want to kill babies. It’s a useless excuse to avoid thinking about the issue at anything less than a team politics level.
I disagree about the tone, I find it childish and unserious. You are welcome to disagree, these are subjective matters, but don’t accuse me of arguing in bad faith.
My comment wasn’t about you, it was about the idea as it gets parroted in news sources.
I’m totally fine with people disagreeing. I’m even ok with the characterization of childish and unserious-it’s a meme so that fits.
Unfortunately I think this trend is going to continue across all parties as we get political personnel who have increasingly grown up in the internet era and use memes as vital communication tools. I just don’t think it’s a big deal and will be seen as less and less so moving forward.
[Time 12:00]; On The Trump Administration’s deportations and errors such as the asylum applicant from El Salvador:
(1): Human error will cause a number of records (and people) to be mistakenly included or excluded. Hopefully these errors are as few as possible. I managed gov data for 25 years and noticed that each step of data collection and analysis presented opportunity for error.
(2): Each of the numerous Democrat catastrophes that The Trump administration attempts to remedy may result in over-correction.
Re: the anti-Japanese (Popeye and Donald Duck and) Bugs Bunny cartoons from the 40s, I always assumed that the Japanese HAD to be making racist propaganda cartoons of their own, but never suspected that their first full-length anti-American was also the first (Pre-Ghibli) anime ever (skip to the end if you want to see that stuff):
Youtube also has a 1936(!) Japanese short which depicts Evil Mickey Mouse riding a giant bird over dancing, happy Japanese animation classic characters, and bombing and shooting them. (He is joined by a whole squadron of Flying Evil Mickey Mouses.
A trivial point (that I somehow feel compelled to make anyway) is that the most recognizable Ghibli film is almost certainly My Neighbor Totoro

Here's a blast from the past: https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/bill-and-hillary-s-double-trouble-clinton-s-two-for-the-price-of-one-pledge-is-returning-to-haunt-him-says-rupert-cornwell-1427937.html
You're right, I remember that as well -- Hillary was going to fix health care as we know it, and the "two-for-one package deal" as well.
